Development and Evaluation of Self-Management Program in Patients with Chronic Kidney Failure Undergoing Hemodialysis

Abstract
Purpose: This study was performed to develop and evaluate self-management program for enhancing hemodialysis-related knowledge, self-efficacy, self-management behavior, physiological markers in patients with chronic kidney failure undergoing he-modialysis. Methods: The research used a quasi-experimental design with a non-equivalent control group pretest-posttest de-sign with convenience sampling. The participants were 34 patients (17 in the experimental group and 17 in the control group). A pretest and posttest were conducted to measure the main variables. The self-management program consisted of individual ed-ucation and a self-efficacy enhancement program. For the experimental group, six sessions of individual training and a four-week self-efficacy enhancement program were applied. Data were analyzed using the repeated measures ANOVA, independent samples t-test, and paired samples t-test with the SPSS 21 statistics program. Results: Statistically significant increases were found in hemodialysis-related knowledge (p<.05), self-efficacy (p<.05), but not in self-management behavior, physiological mark-ers in the experimental group compared to the control group. Conclusion: The results of this study indicated that self-manage-ment program was effective in increasing hemodialysis-related knowledge, self-efficacy. It can be applied as self-management program for hemodialysis patient.
